"RAISE HIGH YOUR TORCH"

(Play, 64 p., 1996, Sarajevo, library of the magazine "Lica")

The starting point of this play is the historical defeat of the Roman legions under the command of the general Publius Quinctilius Varus. Though this military debacle brought even the emperor Augustus down into the pits of despair, the focus instead is on the diabolic atmosphere on the eve of the event. The mood is heightened by anti-theater humor and dialogues suffused with surrealistic verve.

Drawing from passages of the Roman chrestomathies, this work is a caricature of a historical drama. It is a roast of the god Mars and the military command system. Underneath the witty repartee lie wells of expectation and anxiety, which is no coincidence as “Torch” was written during the siege of the Bihać pocket in the 1990s.
